"Kate has a great eye for what makes a book work."

Joanna Courtney read English at Cambridge University where she first discovered a passion for history, specialising in medieval literature. She continued to write through her first years of work and then, married and living in Derbyshire, in the sparse hours available between raising two stepchildren and two more of her own.

She has flourished in shorter fiction and also teaches creative writing across the country and for the Open University.

Joanna writes brilliant historical fiction, evoking past events from the perspectives of our most intriguing and misrepresented women.

She also writes tender contemporary fiction and gripping WW2 novels as Anna Stuart and a lockdown love story, Just the Two of Us, under the name of Jo Wilde.

THE WRITER WHO MOST INSPIRED JOANNA

From the moment I picked up Philippa Gregory’s The Other Boleyn Girl I was hooked. It is such a fresh and clever angle to a well-known story and I knew from that moment I wanted to write books like that.

HOW JOANNA BECAME KATE’S CLIENT

It took me years to get an agent but Kate was one of the very first to show an interest and take the time to offer me constructive feedback. I went back to her several times before she took me on. That original book was contemporary fiction. When we failed to sell it into a very tough market I told Kate I wanted to switch to historical. She was hugely supportive and helped me hone my work to finally secure fantastic publishing deals with Pan Macmillan and then Piatkus.

JOANNA ABOUT KATE

Kate has a great eye for what makes a book work and is tireless in pursuing deals for her authors. I couldn’t have done it without her.

KATE ABOUT JOANNA

Jo is a terrific writer who recreates people and events long past with a fresh eye and a strong voice.  Her female characters are among the best in historical fiction. Not only that, Jo never misses a deadline.

Jo and I have worked together for years and I consider her to be both a highly valued client and a dear friend.
